Looking for a great cardio workout? One that builds muscle, is low impact, and helps improve your flexibility and coordination? Rock climbing checks all of those boxes! But where can you go rock climbing in Brooklyn? Lucky for us, one of the country’s premiere climbing gyms is right here in Gowanus.

Although our neighborhood is not synonymous with indoor rock climbing, Brooklyn Boulders climbing gym in Gowanus leads the way in this exciting exercise industry. Founded in 2009, Brooklyn Boulders is more than just a destination for stimulating fitness experiences. It also offers other amazing opportunities for the community.

Below, we’ll outline some of the many experiences that await Gowanus residents at Brooklyn Boulders.

Rock Climbing Classes

Have you always wanted to try indoor rock climbing but felt intimidated? Brooklyn Boulders understands that feeling. They want the community to embrace and enjoy the thrill of indoor climbing. That’s why they offer multiple indoor rock climbing classes.

First timers can enroll in the “Intro to Climbing” course. Instructors not only teach novice climbers the basics of bouldering, they also share advice on techniques for growth. After you graduate from the bassics and feel more confident, it’s time to attend the “Learn the Ropes” class. Here is where you’ll learn more advanced techniques and the basics of such methods as top-roping. This course is also ideal for intermediate climbers or advanced enthusiasts who need a refresher.

If you’re ready to advance to the lead climber level, Brooklyn Boulder has a course for you. “Learn to Lead” teaches students important skills such as lead climbing, lead belaying, rope handling and  risk management. Plus, it even covers a topic no climber wants to think about— but needs to be prepared for—falling.

Brooklyn Boulders also provides an innovative course called “Climb Like A Girl”. Specially designed for and taught by women, this original class trains enrollees as a team and improves their techniques and endurance.

Multiple Modes of Exercise

From beginners to advanced climbers, Brooklyn Boulders offers everyone an array of gym climbing choices. Novice or intermediate climbers can enjoy auto-belaying. This climbing method includes a safety feature that catches a climber and gently lowers them to the ground if necessary.

Top-roping lets individuals climb from a rope that’s anchored from above. Lead climbing involves setting the rope as you go along and using a climbing partner as your belay. And more advanced climbers can experience bouldering, the technique of climbing without a rope or harness.

Youth Programs

Brooklyn Boulders isn’t just for adults. Children can experience the fun of indoor gym climbing, too. Brooklyn Boulders offers a variety of youth programs aimed at education and enjoyment. The Kids Academy focuses on children ages 5–11, while the Teen Academy covers ages 11–15. Plus, Brooklyn Boulder also offers additional children’s and teen programs by appointment.

The best part about Brooklyn Boulders? It’s just a 10-minute walk or 5-minute drive from 363 Bond Street! If you’re ready to give indoor rock climbing a try, check out Brooklyn Boulders. And if you’re ready to enjoy life at a luxury apartment in Gowanus, contact us today!
