Coney Island’s Famous Mermaid Parade

Though it might be a bit further out from our rentals in Brooklyn, partaking in the frenzy that is the Coney Island Mermaid Parade is a bucket list item that’s within easy reach. This year, the 36th Annual Mermaid Parade will take to the streets on Coney Island. This unique event attracts nearly half a million every year including participants and spectators to ring in the summer season. The parade carries on the spirit of early 20th century Mardi Gras parades that made a home on Coney Island. With costumes, floats, and more themed around everything aquatic – especially mermaids – there’s no better place to honor sea life than on Coney Island.

The parade’s website describes it as, “A celebration of ancient mythology and honky-tonk rituals of the seaside.” The Coney Island Mermaid Parade will feature more than 3,000 creative individuals to start the summer with art and community pride. It is cited as honoring the pageantry of Coney Island through a century of parades. The Mermaid Parade is the largest art parade in the country and it’ll happen less than an hour from our rentals in Brooklyn.

On Saturday, June 16, the parade will start at West 21st Street and Surf Avenue and winds its way to an end at Steeplechase Plaza. The parade is set to start at 1 p.m. and will be held rain or shine.
