Allegro Coffee Roasters

This roastery came to life in Denver but has since opened several small-batch shops across the country, including one right in Gowanus (as well as another in the Bowery district of Manhattan). Their expert scouts travel the globe, fostering relationships with those that produce quality beans. In addition to finding the perfect bean to brew memorable cups of coffee, they also introduce interesting flavors you can’t always find elsewhere, including roasts with hints of maple syrup, raisin, orange zest, and even tobacco.

Brooklyn Habit

Specializing in fair trade, organic coffee from La Colombe, this cornerstone coffee bar is all about creating an intimate gathering spot. In addition to their superb coffee selection, they offer an assortment of Pursuit of Tea options. Plus, if you’re feeling a bit peckish, you can select from a rather expansive menu that includes avocado toast, braised kale, egg frittata, and Moroccan seafood pastilla. If you’ve had all the caffeine you can handle for the day, there’s even an impressive wine and beer menu to order from.

Seeds of Love

This southern-inspired spot, known as Sol to locals, has a full menu of all the caffeinated drinks you’d expect: cafe au lait, espresso, macchiato, mocha, cortado, and so forth. What sets them apart is their menu full of homemade baked goods that are produced fresh on site. Indulge in scones, muffins, bread pudding, or even pillowy brioche, for an extra indulgent start to your morning.

D’Amico Coffee Roasters

In business since 1948, this family-owned coffee shop checks pretension at the door and focuses on delivering the best cup of coffee they can. Though D’Amico’s has expanded in order to provide wholesale distribution across the country, they still practice the same techniques that were introduced when the coffee shop was a brand new, roast-to-order spot. Whether you prefer the full-bodied flavor of a dark blend or the whimsy of a flavored brew — chocolate raspberry cream, anyone? — you don’t want to skip out on this neighborhood staple.

These are just four of our favorite coffee shops in Gowanus. Of course, with this area being such a lively hub, there are so many more to discover. Which one will you visit first?
