Summer is winding down.

Most of our favorite outdoor events wrap up by the end of the fall. And It won’t be long before we have to head indoors for fun!

Luckily, many of our local museums help ease the pain of summer’s end by offering visitors the chance to enjoy their wonders during their discounted and free museum days and hours!

If you’re looking for fun things to do indoors this fall and winter, plan on visiting the museums below during their special admission days!

NYC Museums Offering Admission Specials

As we mentioned above, many of the city’s most popular and lesser known museums offer visitors special admission discounts all year long.

While some offer free admission on certain days, others offer discounted pricing or “pay as you wish” admission policies.

All of these offers are perfect for individuals looking for indoor attractions during the fall and winter, students and families who are on a budget, and anyone that just wants to gain a deeper appreciation of NYC’s many wonderful museums.

Of all the many museums that offer special admissions, here are a few of the most popular ones:

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

More commonly known as “The Met”, this iconic museum is the largest in the Western part of the world.

Split into two locations, The Met’s main location on 5th Avenue hosts an array of paintings from various periods, ancient artifacts from Egypt, sculptures, and numerous exhibits and special events throughout the year.

The Met’s second, smaller location, The Cloisters at Fort Tryon Park, is home to a collection of art and artifacts from Medieval Europe.

Although The Met does not offer free admission days, its daily policy is extremely beneficial to our community. The Met generously invites state residents and students from New York, New Jersey and Connecticut to participate in its “pay what you wish” policy

If you fall into one of these groups and cannot afford the full admission price, The Met’s policy allows you to pay the amount that is most accommodating to your needs.

Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum

Simply known as The Guggenheim to most visitors, this world renowned art museum is home to an impressive collection of pieces from the Impressionist, Post-Impressionist and Modern movements. In addition to a collection of contemporary art, the Guggenheim also features rotating exhibitions for limited times and even special performance events.

Recently, The Guggenheim implemented a new program that has proved popular with the community. On Saturdays, from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM, all visitors can take advantage of the museum’s “pay what you wish” admission policy.

The Museum at FIT

Lovingly referred to as “the most fashionable museum in NYC”, the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology is best known for its many award-winning exhibitions that focus on the cultural significance of fashion and dress.

Boasting attendance rates of 100,000 visitors per year, the Museum at FIT, the admission is popular with students, fashion fans and NYC residents thanks to its Free Admission policy!

While admission is free, please plan your visit during normal business hours from Thursday to Sunday as the museum is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

The Jewish Museum

Famous for its distinction as the first Jewish museum in the US, this popular resource houses the world’s largest collection of Jewish art, both classic and contemporary, and a variety of cultural artifacts.

In addition to its vast permanent collection, the Jewish Museum also hosts a series of special events and exhibitions throughout the year.

Open every day except Tuesdays, Wednesdays and select holidays for a modest ticket price, the museum also welcomes visitors to enjoy free admission every Saturday!

Visitors are encouraged to obtain tickets in advance, as the Saturday tour slots fill up quickly.
