Living a more sustainable lifestyle is something a lot of our residents want to do.

Yet, they’re not sure where to start!

If you’re among the many Brooklynites who want to be more sustainable, keep reading!

We’ll show you how to live more sustainably at home with just a few simple lifestyle tips!

Use Less Plastic Products

One of the first ways to live more sustainably is to reduce your reliance on plastic products.

Take an inventory of the many plastic products and accessories you have in your kitchen and bathroom. Then, see if there are any particular plastic products that you can replace with accessories made from more sustainable materials like glass, wood, stainless steel or ceramic.

Instead of using plastic food storage accessories replace them with glass containers that are microwave and dishwasher safe. Purchase ceramic soap, shampoo and lotion dispensers and fill them up when needed. Make the switch to stainless steel, wooden or rubber kitchen utensils and accessories.

By replacing your plastic products and accessories with glass, wood, ceramic and stainless steel options is a great first step for living a more sustainable lifestyle.

Put Your Gardening Skills To Use

Another way to live more sustainably is to look outside your apartment.

Using your private balcony or patio to grow your own vegetables, herbs and spices is a wonderful way to relax, save money and be more sustainable.

Simply purchase some small planters and essential gardening tools from a local shop. Then visit one of the many area farmer’s markets to pick up some plants or seeds and you’ll have your own little apartment-friendly garden.

In no time at all, you’ll be able to visit your garden for herbs to flavor your soups, pick fresh veggies for your salads or side dishes, and live more sustainably.

Reuse Whenever You Can

If you rely on a lot of disposable, single-use items like bottled water, paper coffee cups and zip-style storage bags, it’s time to make a change.

Replacing these single-use items with reusable items is essential for living sustainably.

Instead of enjoying your morning coffee in the store-issued paper cup, ask them to fill up your insulated stainless steel or ceramic travel mug. Stop buying single-use bottled water and invest in a reusable water bottle you can fill up all day long. Pack your lunch or leftovers in glass or ceramic containers. Leave those pesky plastic bags at the checkout line and pack your groceries and goods in sturdy and reusable fabric bags.

Switching from disposable single-use plastics and papers to reusable accessories also enhances your sustainable lifestyle.
